Associate Counsel (November 2025)
Leonard Carder, LLP, located in Oakland, is looking for attorneys with experience or interest in union labor, employment and employee benefits law, and with a demonstrated commitment to the goals of workers’ rights and the labor movement. Ideal candidates should have strong research, writing and analytical skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with unions, employee benefit trust funds, and workers. Candidates with three or more years of relevant experience are strongly encouraged to apply. This is a hybrid position that requires in-person work in Oakland, California.
For more than 80 years, Leonard Carder has aided unions and workers involved in some of the most memorable labor struggles on the West Coast and has championed workers’ rights in precedent-setting litigation. We represent local and international labor unions and employee benefit plans, as well as representing employees in class actions, individual workers’ rights cases, and law reform litigation.
The salary range for associate attorneys is between $92,000 and $141,000 annually, depending on bar passage and experience. Associate attorneys are also eligible for loan repayment up to $4,000 per year and annual bonuses. Leonard Carder provides a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, life insurance, long-term disability insurance, and cell phone reimbursement. After one year of employment, associate attorneys are eligible for Leonard Carder’s 401k plan, with employer contributions.

An ideal candidate should have strong research, writing and analytical skills, be a confident oral advocate, and be able to provide clear and supportive supervision to associates handling arbitrations, administrative hearings, and litigation.
Compensation will depend on the candidate’s experience and the details of the arrangement. Starting salary of $130,000+ with bonus potential. Salary negotiable based on experience, particularly for a candidate who has worked as a partner at a union-side firm, or who has considerable experience working in-house for a union.
