June 2006: Long-Term Funding of Public Sector Retiree Health Benefits

In this article published in the CPER Journal dated June 2006, Leonard Carder partner Peter Saltzman discusses the long-term agreement to protect and fund retiree health benefits for BART employees that was achieved in 2005 by Amalgamated Transit Workers Local 1555. Mr. Saltzman, who was the chief architect of this agreement, generalizes from this experience and explains the lessons that we all can and should learn from the parties’ landmark agreement.
