Judge Claudia Wilken ruled that
workers who operate the Alcatraz Island ferry service are
entitled to prevailing wages for their labor and the Court
issued a
preliminarily injunction preventing the United States
National Parks Service from awarding a contract that would
have dramatically reduced wages and stripped workers of
benefits. The International Organization of Masters, Mates
and Pilots and the Inlandboatmen's Union of the Pacific, ILWU,
represented by Leonard Carder, obtained this victory
resulting in the first published decision in the country
ruling that the federal Service Contract Act applies to
concessions contracts let by the National Parks Service. |
