May 2006: Federal Court Enjoins US Nat’l Parks Service From Subcontracting Work
 

 

  Judge Claudia Wilken ruled that workers who operate the Alcatraz Island ferry service are entitled to prevailing wages for their labor and the Court issued a preliminarily injunction preventing the United States National Parks Service from awarding a contract that would have dramatically reduced wages and stripped workers of benefits. The International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots and the Inlandboatmen's Union of the Pacific, ILWU, represented by Leonard Carder, obtained this victory resulting in the first published decision in the country ruling that the federal Service Contract Act applies to concessions contracts let by the National Parks Service.
